Background: Combining forces for greater impact

Religion has a strong influence on political and social life. It influences many people's view of the world, their lifestyles and their civic engagement. Religious beliefs can bring people together or cause division. Religion can foster or hold back social progress. It can promote peace, or hinder it. In international politics, religion can help policymakers in reviewing current value systems and focusing their future actions on supporting sustainability. more


German government supports joint action for more peace and development

All over the world, both government institutions and faith communities are actively working to realise development goals. Closer collaboration between these players would be a major step forward in the direction of peace and sustainable development. In order to launch a fundamental debate on global values, religion and development, German Development Minister Gerd Müller set up a task force in spring 2014 on values, religion and development. The purpose of the task force is to combine the expertise from various units in the German Development Ministry more closely, to better harmonise interventions that are related to this set of issues and combine them into a new overall approach, and to develop new strategies. more
