Background: Raw materials – an opportunity for sustainable economic development

Mineral and energy resources are of key importance worldwide, especially to industrialised countries like Germany. And for many developing countries, these raw materials provide a major source of income. The raw materials sector offers them opportunities for social, political and economic development. Yet where there is poor governance, resource wealth can also become the cause of corruption, environmental pollution or social conflict. more

German development cooperation in the raw materials sector

The raw materials sector can play a major role in reducing poverty and achieving sustainable development. But this can only happen if the necessary political, economic and social frameworks are supported and stabilised in the partner countries. Good governance, an appropriate legal framework and transparent and competent administration are therefore key elements on which German development cooperation is focused. more

The Extractives and Development sector programme

The Extractives and Development sector programme supports government institutions in developing countries to establish their extractive sector to benefit sustainable development in the countries on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). more

International initiatives

Germany supports international initiatives in the raw materials sector and promotes the creation of regulatory mechanisms that apply worldwide. In this way, the German government is helping to develop and implement universally recognised principles and sustainability standards across the whole extractive sector. Moreover, Germany's cooperation with partners such as the European Union and the United Nations constitutes an important component in the drive to establish greater transparency, accountability and good governance in the oil, gas and mining sectors. more
