Germany’s commitment

Sustainable and climate-smart urban development

Tram in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

To promote sustainable and climate-smart urban development worldwide, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) focuses on integrated approaches that involve a number of different issues and stakeholders. For example, at national and municipal level it promotes the development and implementation of urban development strategies that consider all aspects of mitigation and resilience in the face of climate change.

German development cooperation stresses the importance of establishing climate-smart infrastructure that can withstand the impacts of climate change. Three-quarters of German Financial cooperation in the field of adaptation to climate change is focused on cities, as are more than half of German loans and subsidies for mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions. In the case of current climate change adaptation and mitigation projects undertaken by Technical Cooperation, too, around one-fifth of the funding volume is targeted at cities.
