General human rights

What is being done in Germany?

Together with Germany's other federal ministries, the BMZ is helping strengthen international human rights. In its Human Rights Report the German government provides regular information on its human rights orientation in domestic, foreign and development policy; it specifies the tasks it has yet to accomplish in a corresponding plan of action.

The BMZ also supports worldwide engagement for the realisation of human rights through intensive cooperation with civil society and non-governmental organisations in Germany. Today, non-governmental organisations and human rights defenders very often draw international attention to human rights violations. Such globally active organisations wield influence and can succeed in preventing many violations of human rights and bringing others to light.

Human rights are also a thematic priority in the BMZ's activities to promote private institutions. To operationalise its human rights strategy, the BMZ has developed a set of criteria to provide private institutions with starting points for formulating development projects to strengthen the human rights work of civil society actors on the ground.
