Partner Countries
Fine-tuning strategies
The basis for development cooperation between Germany and its partner countries are governmental negotiations that take place about every two years. All decisions are then set down in internationally binding treaties. They are based on priority area strategy papers, developed in an intensive dialogue between the partner governments. more
Regions
The wider picture
In order for development cooperation with our partner countries to be successful, one not only has to consider the parameters of each country, but the economic, historic and societal developments of the region in which the country is situated also play an equally important role. The BMZ has therefore developed regional strategies. They bridge the gap between the overarching development-policy principles and aims of the ministry and the individual country strategies. more
Country Concentration
Setting priorities
Until the end of the 1990s, Germany supported around 120 developing countries. Since then, the German government has limited cooperation to between 70 and 75 countries. In the medium term, German development cooperation is to focus on 60 partner countries. Cooperation also concentrates on certain priority areas in order to maximise the effectiveness of the development funding invested and the results achieved. more
